Understanding Email Headers

Why Headers Matter

Email headers contain metadata about the message's journey from sender to recipient. They reveal:

  • The actual origin server (not just claimed sender)
  • Whether authentication passed or failed
  • Signs of spoofing or phishing
  • Delays or routing issues

Common Red Flags

  • SPF fail: Server not authorized to send for that domain
  • DKIM fail: Message was modified in transit
  • Mismatched From/Reply-To: Potential phishing
  • Suspicious origin: Email claims to be from trusted source but originated elsewhere
