Before You Begin

1. Create a Throwaway Email

Set up a dedicated email address for opt-out requests. Data brokers often add requesters to new databases. Never use your primary email. ProtonMail is a good choice.

2. Use a VPN

Hide your IP address while navigating these sites. Mullvad VPN or NordVPN work well.

3. Create a Tracking Spreadsheet

Track: Site name, date submitted, confirmation number, expected completion date, status. You'll need this for follow-ups.

4. Consider a Burner Phone

Some sites require phone verification. Google Voice or TextNow provide free numbers that can receive calls.

California DELETE Act (Coming 2026)

One Request, All Data Brokers

Starting in 2026, California's DELETE Request Opt-Out Portal (DROP) will let California residents submit a single request that goes to ALL registered data brokers simultaneously.

Until then, you're stuck with the manual process above. But if you're a California resident, you can use CCPA language in your requests for additional legal weight.

See the California Data Broker Registry for the current list of 500+ registered brokers.

The Uncomfortable Truth

This is not a permanent solution. Data brokers continuously scrape public records, buy data from other brokers, and rebuild profiles. Your information will reappear.

Even opting out of every site on this list doesn't guarantee privacy. In most states, voter registration and real estate records are public. The underlying data sources remain accessible.

What you're doing is raising the cost of finding you. Most casual searchers won't dig deeper than the first few people search sites. By removing yourself from the major players, you make your information harder to find than the average person's - and that's often enough.

For complete privacy, you'd need to:

  • Use a trust or LLC for property ownership
  • Register to vote confidentially (available in some states for domestic violence survivors, judges, etc.)
  • Use mail forwarding services instead of your real address
  • Consider identity compartmentalization strategies

See our digital compartmentalization guide for advanced strategies.
