TL;DR: Roughly 30 billion environmental scans collected from Pokemon Go players since 2021 have been folded into a visual positioning system now partnered with Vantor, the defense and intelligence contractor that rebranded from Maxar Intelligence on October 1, 2025. The two companies announced the partnership on December 16, 2025, to fuse ground-level visual positioning with Vantor's aerial navigation software for autonomous drones and other military robots operating in GPS-denied environments. Players consented to a license granting Niantic "a transferable, sublicensable" right to their footage, under terms most never read. Vantor told reporters it will not use Pokemon Go data going forward, then declined to say whether the model it is now fielding was trained on those scans. On June 11, 2026, Niantic Spatial put out a formal statement to Kotaku that the Pokemon Go data is "not part of" the Vantor agreement, because the games business was spun off into Scopely in May 2026 and the scans are no longer flowing. That is a denial about the future data flow. It is not a denial about the model that was already trained. The "early version" of Niantic Spatial's navigation model was trained on the player scans, the company has already admitted. Once training data is baked into a model, proving what is in there becomes close to impossible. A Saudi sovereign wealth fund now owns the game. The map went to defense.
The Pipeline: Game to Battlefield in Three Steps
Step one: you walked around with your phone held up, sweeping the camera in a 360-degree arc around a local park, a coffee shop, a Pokestop. You got some extra in-game items. That was the deal.
Step two: Niantic took those 30 billion-ish scans, stitched them into a 3D model of the world, and built a Visual Positioning System (VPS) on top. A VPS figures out where a camera is by matching what it sees against a detailed 3D model. Two recognizable reference points a few pixels wide can fix a location. No satellite required [1].
Step three: on December 16, 2025, Niantic Spatial, the company that now owns the scanning platform after Niantic's games business was sold off, announced a partnership with Vantor to combine that ground-level VPS with Vantor's Raptor aerial navigation software. The result, per the two companies' own release, lets a drone overhead and a vehicle or dismounted operator below share coordinates in real time, "with no satellite link" [1][2].
This is the part that solves a real and well-documented problem. Russia jams GPS in Ukraine. The U.S. military's Drone Dominance evaluations added GPS denial to Phase II this year. Shield AI's V-BAT keeps flying when radio links die. A drone that navigates by what its camera sees, rather than by trusting a satellite signal that can be spoofed, is a meaningful capability. None of that is in dispute.
The dispute is about consent, and where the training data came from.
What You Actually Agreed To
Since 2021, Pokemon Go has asked players to record short videos of real-world locations to earn extra in-game items. Scanning the buildings, streets, and trees around a Pokestop in a 360-degree sweep was optional, and Niantic asked separately for permission to keep the footage. Granting it meant agreeing to extra terms [1].
Those terms handed Niantic "a transferable, sublicensable license" to the scans, meaning the company could resell the imagery to third parties. Floris De Hingh, a 34-year-old Dutch player who downloaded the game on its first available day in 2016, told Dutch newspaper Trouw he never connected the footage he captured to a system that would steer military drones. "I was just playing a game," he said. He had even scanned the inside of his own apartment [1].
De Hingh quit the game more than a year ago because he was tired of the updates, not the data terms. He called the news of the Vantor partnership "an enormous eye-opener." "A game should stay a game," he said [1].
British game designer Adrian Hon, who has tracked the Niantic data story closely, has gone further, advising Pokemon Go players to stop making scans and consider smaller games less likely to resell their data [1].
Vantor: Not a Startup Dabbling in Defense
Vantor is a prime contractor to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, holding a follow-on award worth $70 million under the agency's Global Enhanced GEOINT Delivery program, which serves more than 400,000 U.S. government users [1][3]. The company rebranded from Maxar Intelligence on October 1, 2025, and its own corporate copy describes its mission as "forging the new frontier of spatial intelligence" for the "defense, intelligence, and commercial sectors" [3].
This is not a side project. Niantic Spatial's own "Defense and Intelligence" product page now lists the Vantor partnership as a flagship offering, with copy that explicitly markets "GPS-independent operations" and "real-time situational awareness" for what it calls "decisive mission advantage" [2]. In May 2026, Niantic Spatial also achieved "Awardable" status on the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace for its Visual Positioning System, the Pentagon's main portal for evaluating commercial AI vendors [2].
Vantor's own framing of the joint system is blunt about the problem it targets. The release names GPS "unavailability, spoofing, interference, and jamming" as the vulnerability, and lists autonomous drones, vehicles, augmented reality glasses, and other field assets as the platforms meant to run on the shared system. Field testing of the integrated system is planned for early 2026 [1].
The Non-Answer That Is the Whole Story
Asked directly by Trouw whether the military-bound system relies on Pokemon Go imagery, Vantor said it would not use the game's data. The company then declined to say whether the model it plans to deploy was trained on those scans in the past [1].
Niantic Spatial, responding to earlier questions about a separate deal, said the scans were used to train an "early version" of its navigation model. On the defense partnership specifically, the company said it had no new information to share [1].
Those two statements are not the same, and the difference is the story. Jeroen van den Hoven, a professor of ethics and technology at TU Delft, told Trouw the conclusion is hard to avoid. "Without the huge number of scans from all those gamers, the development of this system would never have progressed so quickly," he said [1].
He added the part defenders of the deal will find most uncomfortable: AI models begin with a dataset and then absorb far more data until the original contributions blur into patterns that can no longer be traced. Once a scan is folded into a model, proving it is or is not in there becomes nearly impossible. That conveniently makes the denial unfalsifiable [1].
Update (June 11, 2026): Niantic Responds, and the Denial Gets a Corporate Structure
On June 11, 2026, the day after Trouw's reporting and the DroneXL follow-up, Niantic Spatial put out a more formal statement. Kotaku published the company's response, including two distinct claims. First: the Pokemon Go data "is not part of" the agreement with Vantor. Second: Pokemon Go's data is not shared with Niantic Spatial in the first place, because the company was spun off in 2025 and the games business is now owned by Scopely [6].
That second claim is the new piece of the denial. Niantic the games company is now a subsidiary of Scopely, which is owned by Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group, which is in turn backed by the kingdom's Public Investment Fund. Niantic Spatial, the entity running the Visual Positioning System and the December 16, 2025 Vantor partnership, has its own separate data set: the scans fed to it by Niantic Labs between 2021 and the spin-off, plus whatever else it has since trained on top of them. The Kotaku statement is, in effect, "we do not get scans from the game anymore, because the game is no longer ours."
It does not, and cannot, address what the model was trained on between 2021 and 2025. The early version of the Niantic Spatial navigation model was trained on those scans. Niantic Spatial admitted as much to Trouw. The Kotaku denial is about the future data flow, not the past. The structural problem is the same: once training data is baked into a model, the original contributions blur. You cannot unwrap a model and remove the scans. You can only train a new one without them, which Niantic Spatial may or may not be doing, and may or may not tell anyone about.
The Kotaku piece ran on Kotaku.com the evening of June 11 (published 2026-06-11 21:26 UTC). Dexerto and Gameranx carried the denial the next morning. Techmeme aggregated the gaming and tech press pickup on June 12 [6][7][8][9]. None of the pickup added new sourcing. The new pieces are the corporate-structure argument, the timing, and the way the denial maps neatly onto a question that was not actually being asked. Vantor was asked whether the model was trained on the scans. Niantic Spatial answered a different question: whether new scans are flowing. Both can be true. The public read is going to be "Pokemon Go data was not used," and the public read is what both companies are now relying on.
That is the update. The rest of the article stands.
It Was Always Going To End Up Here
The military turn looks less like a swerve once you trace the company's lineage.
Niantic grew out of Keyhole, a geographic data firm that took funding in 2003 from In-Q-Tel, the venture arm financed by the CIA. An In-Q-Tel release from that year stated Keyhole's services were used to support U.S. troops during the Iraq War. Google bought Keyhole the following year, and Keyhole CEO John Hanke went on to lead the team behind Google Maps, Google Earth, and Street View [1].
Hanke formed Niantic Labs inside Google in 2010, then spun it out in 2015. The company collected camera imagery from players once before, through its 2014 game Ingress, using the same method later applied in Pokemon Go. In 2025 the structure split again: Scopely, owned by Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group and ultimately the kingdom's Public Investment Fund, acquired Niantic's games business for $3.5 billion in a deal that closed in late May 2026, while the technology platform spun off as the standalone Niantic Spatial under Hanke [1].
The games went to a Saudi sovereign wealth fund. The map went to defense. The players got the worst of both worlds without ever consenting to either.
The Same Pipeline, Different Upstream
Pokemon Go is not the only camera in your pocket feeding a map. Meta's smart glasses continuously scan a wearer's surroundings, Apple's AR hardware builds 3D models of interiors, and Waymo's self-driving cars reconstruct detailed street layouts. In March 2025, Niantic Spatial announced a separate deal with Coco Robotics to guide delivery robots already rolling through U.S. cities and Helsinki [1].
The pattern is the same one Citizen Lab documented in its November 2025 investigation of Penlink's Webloc platform [4]. Webloc let law enforcement agencies pull precise geolocation data on individual devices by piggybacking on the real-time bidding auctions that sell ads to your phone. The data was never supposed to leave the ad stack. It did. Citizen Lab found Penlink marketing the capability to police, with documented deployments in the U.S., Mexico, and elsewhere [4].
The mechanism is the same in both cases. A consumer product collects data for one stated purpose. A third party in the pipeline, sometimes a contractor, sometimes an ad-tech middleman, sometimes a defense prime, ends up with a copy. The original user has no visibility, no meaningful consent path, and no way to claw the data back. Iris Muis, a data-ethics expert at Utrecht University's Data School, framed the trap plainly: a user cannot picture how their data might be used later. Maybe in five years there is an application with effects you fundamentally disagree with [1].
What You Can Do
- Stop scanning Pokestops in Pokemon Go. The in-game reward is small. The data flows onward. Niantic says scans are optional, and they are. If you have already scanned, the terms you agreed to were sublicensable, so there is no individual deletion path. You can stop adding to the pile.
- Check Niantic's data deletion request form. Niantic allows account-level deletion requests, which can remove some of your account data. It does not remove scans already folded into trained models, for the reasons described above. It does at least close the forward valve.
- Be skeptical of any consumer app that asks for camera sweeps of real-world locations. Ingress, Pokemon Go, and a growing set of AR apps use the same model: pay users small in-game rewards, get a transferable license to environmental data. Read the extra terms before tapping "agree."
- Watch the early-2026 field tests. DroneXL's reporting notes the integrated Vantor/Niantic Spatial system is scheduled for field testing in early 2026. Whether the system performs as advertised is a real question. Whether the data it was trained on came from a game is a separate question, and Vantor has declined to answer it.
- Push for audit rights on training data. This is a structural fix, not an individual one. The only way to know what is inside a trained model is to require disclosure as a condition of government procurement. The CDAO Tradewinds "Awardable" status Niantic Spatial just received is a procurement signal. Taxpayers funding the deployment should be able to ask what data the model was trained on.
- Watch the corporate split. The Scopely/Niantic deal closed in late May 2026. Niantic Spatial is a separate company from Niantic Games. The two will have different policies over time. Track which one is making the decisions you care about.
You Signed Up for a Game. The Map Went to Defense.
Consent obtained for a game is not consent for a weapons program, even if the end use turns out to be defensible. The capability gap Vantor is filling, drones that navigate when GPS is jammed, is real, and the work is being done by serious people solving a serious problem. The training data came from people who thought they were catching Pikachu, under a license most never read, sold up a chain that ends at a Saudi sovereign wealth fund on one side and a National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency prime contractor on the other.
Vantor says it will not use the data. Vantor will not say whether the model is already trained on it. The early version of the model, by Niantic Spatial's own admission to reporters, was. Once training data is baked in, tracing it back is close to impossible. That is the part the press release skips, and it is the part that matters.
