Romanian law and courts govern its terms and disputes, which puts it under EU data protection law rather than a US jurisdiction like most of the antivirus category (Norton, McAfee).

Unlike a lot of consumer security software, Bitdefender's malware-detection claims are backed by real, independent testing labs that publish their methodology.

The Bundled VPN Trap

Bitdefender sells a VPN as an add-on or bundled feature in higher-tier plans, marketed under the same trusted brand name as the antivirus. Independent VPN reviewers have found it logs a range of identifiable data: your real IP address, browsing activity, connection timestamps, device information, and bandwidth usage. That is close to the opposite of what a privacy-focused VPN should do, and it's a meaningfully different product from the antivirus engine that earned the AV-Test scores above.
There's also a documented wrinkle: Bitdefender's VPN privacy policy has been found to overlap with Aura's (a separate US identity-protection company, also reviewed on this site in our Data Broker Removal section), creating ambiguity about which company actually handles what data, under which jurisdiction. Romanian-company reassurance doesn't necessarily apply if the VPN backend runs through a US partner.
